Parshat Haazinu

(2 Samuel 22:1-51)
October 11, 2008
12 Tishre 5769

David's paean to God touches upon many subjects, among them, thanksgiving over being saved by God from death and David's victory over his enemies. In the midst of these themes, the song takes on some bold theologically subjects, like David's redemption being compensation for his righteousness, the nature of reward and punishment in general and statements about the nature of God. In one verse, this song describes God's interaction with the world in these words: "the way of God is perfect; the word of God is pure" (Verse 31)

Rabbi David Kimche (12th century Provence) sees in this verse a description of the workings of Divine justice in the world: "God compensates each person according to his deeds, He compensates me according to my righteousness and my enemy according to his wickedness; 'His words' – all of His judgments are flawless, all are clear and clean, exacted with integrity and faithfulness, purified without dross." Similarly, Rabbi Joseph Kara (12th century France) explains: "All that God promised me, He guards His promises and carries out His word in truth. God for these commentators governs the world with absolute justice meting out what is proper to each person.

Unlike the above commentators, the following midrash reads this verse as a statement - not as a comment on Divine justice but rather as a statement about the purpose of God's commandments: "'The way of God is perfect; the word of God is pure (tzerufa)' (2 Samuel 22, 31) Rav said: The precepts were given only in order that man might be refined by them, as it says: 'the word of God is purifying' For what does the Holy One, blessed be He, care whether a man kills an animal by the throat or by esophagus? Hence its purpose is to refine man." (adapted from Midrash Tehillim 18:25 Buber ed. p. 152)

There are many different theories about the purpose of the commandments. Some assert that their purpose is to build God's ideal society. Others assert that their purpose is to shape the ideal individual. Still others conclude that their purpose is exclusively to serve God. This particular midrash seems to combine the first two ideas. Rav, here, asserts that the reason for the commandments is not that they have an effect on God but rather that they have an impact on the individual or community that observes them. To paraphrase a statement from another version of this midrash: "If God is perfect, how much more so should we try to heed His ways." (See Genesis Rabbah 44:1)

Parshat Vayelech⁄Shabbat Shuva

(Hosea 12:1-10)
October 4, 2008
5 Tishre 5769

Hosea's prophetic message closely links repentance, the return to God, and political hegemony. Hosea champions the idea that one's political fate is not dependent on juggling political and international alliances or on one's weaponry, but rather on faith, loyalty and dependence on God. This ideology is stated succinctly in the following verse: "Assyria shall not save us, no more will we ride on horses; Nor ever again will we call our handiwork our god, for in You alone orphans find pity." (Hosea 14:4)

In the Mishnah Torah, Laws of Repentance (2:2), Maimonides offers his definition of Teshuva (repentance) using this verse as a proof for God's role in the process: "And what is teshuva? It occurs when the sinner forsakes his sin and removes it from his thoughts and resolves in his heart that he will not do it again, as it is written: 'Let the wicked give up his ways, the sinful man his plans; let him turn back to the Lord and He will pardon him' (Isaiah 56:7). The sinner should also regret his sins, as it says: 'Now that I have turned back, I am filled with remorse' (Jeremiah 31:19). And the One who knows all secrets (God) should bear testimony regarding him that he will not return again to this sin ever again, as it says: 'we will never again call our handiwork our god, for in You, the orphan finds mercy' (Hosea 14:4) And he needs to confess verbally that which he has concluded in his heart.

Commentators felt compelled to explain Maimonides' use of the verse from our haftarah as proof that God acts as a witness for the person who repents so that he or she will not again return to his or her sin. Joseph Karo (Kesef Mishnah), the author of the Shulchan Aruch, explains that one must understand the verse to say that a person takes God as the exclusive witness to the promise not to return to one's sinful ways.

Rabbi Zadok Hakohen from Lublin, one of last of the great Hasidic masters of Poland (19th-20th century), explains why this is so important. He points out that making God the witness and guarantor will help a person not to return to his or her old sinful ways. He asserts that it is human nature to show remorse over past wrongdoing, but it is equally human nature to easily slip back into sinful behavior the moment that the opportunity arises. To show remorse and then to return to sin is not teshuva. If God is involved, a person may be able to insure his or her resolve to conquer sin. This is why teshuva required "return to God". (Hosea 14:3) (See Takanat Hashavim 9:2 Melamed ed. p. 101)

The First Day of Rosh Hashanah

(1 Samuel 1:1-2:10)
September 30, 2008
1 Tishre 5769

Rosh Hashanah is known also as Yom Hazikaron – the Day of Remembrance. The Torah and Haftarah readings for the first day resonate with this theme. In particular, we read of our childless matriarch Sarah, whom God remembers and grants a child. Similarly, in the haftarah, we read the story of Hannah who is also childless. During one of her family's yearly pilgrimages to the Sanctuary in Shiloh, her desperation led her to offer her sincerest prayers and yearnings for a child before God. The sages draw a number of significant lessons from Hannah's prayer, some theological and others practical.

Hannah's prayer to God opens with this promise: "O Lord of Hosts (Tzvaot), if you will look upon the suffering of Your maidservant and will remember me and not forget Your maidservant. And if You will grant Your maidservant a male child, I will dedicate him to the Lord for all the days of his life; and no razor shall ever touch his head." (1:11) In Hannah's oath, she addresses God as the "Lord of Hosts", an appellation which the sages thought unusual.

In one midrash, this reference leads to a radical challenge to God: Said Rabbi Yehuda bar Simon: "Hannah said before the Holy One Blessed Be He: 'There are Hosts in the heavens and there are Hosts down on earth. The Hosts in heaven do not eat or drink, nor do they procreate or die but rather live forever; the Hosts on earth eat and drink, procreate and die. I do not know which group I belong to, to the Hosts in heaven or to the Hosts on earth. If I belong to the Host in heaven, I should not have to eat and drink, nor procreate or die. I should live forever! But if I belong to the Hosts on earth, then I should eat and drink, procreate and die. Just as I eat and drink, so should I procreate and die! (Pesikta Rabati 43 Ish Shalom ed. 179b) This midrash demands from God that He make some semblance of order out of His Hosts since He is their Master and Creator.

The Talmud seeks to make this point more directly: Said Rabbi Elazar: 'From the day that the Holy One Blessed Be He created His world no one had ever called God: 'Hosts", until Hannah came along and called Him by this name. Hannah said before God: 'Master of the World, of all the hosts that you have created in Your world, is it too difficult in Your sight to give me but a single son.'" (adapted from Berachot 31b)

What is evident from both of these passages is Hannah's acknowledgement that God's mastery extends over all of creation, on high and down below, things large and things small, the significant and the seemingly insignificant. (See Rabbi J.B. Soloveitchik, Yemei Zikaron, pp. 41-42) This awareness gives us the ability to address God with our concerns and needs in this season of remembering and this is what gives God the opportunity and the power to remember and be cognizant of the needs of His creators and to show them His concern. For all these things, Hannah serves as our role model.

Parshat Nitzavim

Parshat Nitzavim
(Isaiah 61:10-63:9)
Sept 27, 2008
27 Elul 5768
The prophet assures us that God will not abide Jerusalem's lowly status. He will not remain silent until the dignity of Jerusalem (Zion) is restored: "For the sake of Zion I will not remain silent; for the sake of Jerusalem I will not remain still until her victory emerges resplendent and her triumph like a flaming torch." (62:1) This victory will only be realized when "nations will see your victory and every king your majesty and you shall be called by a new name which the Lord Himself will bestow." (62:2)
A name change in Biblical thinking (and in the ancient Near East in general) represented a change in status, a kind of rebirth. We already see this phenomenon earlier in Isaiah: "and you shall be called city of the Lord, Zion of the Holy one of Israel." (60:14) It is also familiar to us from Abraham's name change from Avram to Avraham and Sarah's name change from Sarai to Sarah when God changed their status (Genesis 15:5;15). (S. Paul, Isaiah 40 – 66, Mikra L'Yisrael, pp. 501-502)
The following midrash adopted this idea with an appropriate message for this season: "In the future, the Community of Israel will say before the Holy One Blessed Be He: the witnesses against me stand before us [to testify regarding our sins]: 'I call heaven and earth this day to witness against you" (Deut. 4:26) God responded: 'I will replace them', as it is written: 'For behold, I am creating a new heaven and a new earth.' (Isaiah 65:17) The Community of Israel said before the Holy One Blessed Be He: 'But my name remains the same. [Even though I have repented, still I will be answerable for my sins.] God responded: 'I will change your name', as it is written: 'you shall be called by a new name which the Lord Himself will bestow'." (adapted from Sifre Devarim 306, Finkelstein ed. p. 329)
The original idea of this verse was political in nature. Jerusalem's status would change from a conquered and vanquished city to a vibrant and renewed city. Its population would be transformed from an exiled community into a redeemed community. This midrash expresses Israel's anxiety over whether teshuva (repentance) is sufficient to transform a sinner into a recognized penitent. God's response is that He will do all that is in His power to insure this transformation. He will manipulate the witnesses and He will change the identity of the former sinner to guarantee a new start. Such is the power of repentance and such is the love of God for His creatures.

“In accordance with synagogue policy, we ask that members not go into the kitchen and not make plates of food to take home on Shabbos. The food left over from the kiddush is often used at other synagogue functions on Sunday or frozen for use another time. Additionally, “carrying” is strongly discouraged on Shabbos and so it is not appropriate to be carrying food out of the synagogue on Shabbos. We ask for everyone’s help in cooperating with this policy.”

Dr. Leon Spotts Educational Fund

Dear Beth Shalom family,

Since this weekend's activities are designed to honor Dr. Spotts, I am encouraging our members to make a contribution in Dr. Spotts honor to the newly established "Dr. Leon Spotts Educational Fund."

A few weeks ago, the Board of Directors approved the establishment of a fund that would allow for the extension of Dr. Spotts commitment to Jewish Education. The Board of Education quickly endorsed this thought and are eager to establish a base of working funds where we can recognize and honor our young students and the dedicated staff that makes it all possible.

Knowing the thoughts of Dr. Spotts as I do, I am sure he will be most thankful to know the Education Fund is supporting our youth in their development and love for a Jewish life.

Thank you for your support and generosity!

Daryl Giddings
Chairperson, Board of Education

DVDs for the Peace Corps
in Namibia, Africa
Recreational opportunities in Namibia, like all else, are scarce. There is no TV. Peace Corps volunteers rely mainly on DVDs, always in short supply. An exchange of E-mails determined that the volunteers in Africa would welcome DVDs from Columbia, and they would not only be used for recreational purposes, but to enrich the school curriculum where suitable and to reward students for special achievement. Jerry Breger initiated a project proposal for Beth Shalom Synagogue, to provide DVDs for the Peace Corps volunteers by contributions. The proposal was approved and the project is now underway. Please put your DVD (new or used) contributions that you wish to contribute, in the box in the foyer by the office. The highest order of charity -- the greatest mitzvah -- is to give to those in need we do not know.

DVDs for the Peace Corpsin Namibia, Africa

The DVD Project at Beth Shalom Synagogue

This project originated with the letters of Leslie Michael, a Peace Corps volunteer in Namibia to Jerry Breger in Columbia. Leslie is a retired school teacher who joined the Peace Corps last autumn and was assigned to Namibia in December. Jerry is an emeritus professor of economics at USC. Leslie's letters described this barren and impoverished country called Namibia and the immense challenge the Peace Corps faces to educate its children and to spur development there. Namibia is a new country in West Africa, founded in 1990 and struggling with the basics of development: economic, social, political, medical, and educational. Leslie reports that education is a bright spot in the development picture. Students and teachers are willing to work hard for long hours with few resources, and progress is good.

Recreational opportunities in Namibia, like all else, are scarce. There is no TV. Peace Corps volunteers rely mainly on DVDs, always in short supply. An exchange of E-mails determined that the volunteers would welcome DVDs from Columbia, and they would not only be used for recreational purposes, but to enrich the school curriculum where suitable and to reward students for special achievement. Jerry drafted a project proposal for Beth Shalom Synagogue to provide DVDs for the Peace Corps volunteers either by contributions or purchase. The proposal was approved and the project is now underway.

In accordance with the Talmudic concept of Tikkkun Olom, repairing the world, this is a most worthy endeavor. Beth Shalom is happy to commit to it and welcomes the cooperation of any other organization or individual who wishes to participate in this cause.

Please put the DVDs (new or used) you wish to contribute in the box in the foyer by the office.
