Tikkun Leil Shabbat & Shavout Schedule

Thursday, May 28
8:30 p.m.

TIKKUN LEIL SHAVUOT. Maariv Service followed by Torah at night, with an all-star line-up at Beth Shalom with Rabbi Jonathan Case, Rebecca Pinsker, Dr. Leon Spotts and Prof. Dr. Katja Vehlow.

Because Shavuot commemorates the giving the Torah on Mt. Sinai, the Rabbis ordained that for this occasion, a special table be set for a sumptuous dairy holiday meal, and then the remainder of the evening be devoted to Jewish study. Come join us!

TOPICS WILL BE:

Thursday, May 28
8:30 p.m.

Coercion in the Giving of Torah?

Rambam explains in Hilchot Teshuva that reward and punishment are predicated on our free will and thus be held accountable for his actions. Coercion is negates the value of free will. Did HaShem really force our ancestors to accept Torah?
Rebecca Pinsker

Did Torah Come from Heaven?

In the traditional rabbinic mind there are raging arguments about God's role in the world. Many stories detail the place where heaven and earth meet. Do we even have the right to interpret divine authority at all? We will read some classic texts from talmudic literature.
Prof. Katja Vehlow

I'm Counting....

The Omer Period leads up to the holiday of the Giving of Torah, SHAVUOT. What exactly is the Omer? How do we count it? Why even bother to count for seven weeks?
Dr. Leon Spotts

Looking at the Ten
There are Ten Big Ones. We know what they are. Or do we? A closer look at the the undergirding of the fabric of all moral law. We will gaze at long familiar texts.
Rabbi Jonathan Case
